The Basic Principles of Ba Zi: The Ten Stems
Part 1

The Ten Stems, also known as Ten Heavenly Stems or Shi Zhi, represent the celestial influences in Ba Zi analysis. Each stem is associated with one of the five Chinese Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, embodying specific characteristics and attributes.

1. Jia (甲): Representing Wood, Jia symbolizes strength, vitality, and upright growth of the big tree. Jia symbolizes strength in general, but also the particular strength that plants need to be able to grow out of the earth. Therefore, Jia is often related to the new beginnings and the initiation of new ventures.
2. Yi (乙): Also associated with Wood, Yi embodies the Yin qualities of the Wood Element, mainly resilience, and adaptability. Yi is also about spreading, covering, and diversity (as in potted plants, but also grass, weed, and beautiful flowers). It complements Jia’s energy with its gentle, and nurturing nature.
3. Bing (丙): As the representative of Yang Fire, Bing radiates enthusiasm, warmth, and passion. Being represented by the Sun, Bing is an unlimited source of light, visibility, and transformation. This dynamic and creative principle also teaches us to laugh and enjoy life.
4. Ding (丁): Another manifestation of the Fire Element, Ding embodies the Yin side of Fire: gentleness, usefulness, and companionship. It is about having light when there is no Sun and being able to help with making tools. Ding is the source of inspiration, motivation, and guidance. It also represents connections and social interactions – everything opposite of being alone or isolated.
5. Wu (戊): Symbolizing Yang Earth, Wu embodies stability, persistence, and reliability. It represents lasting values, but it also stands for distance and reservation. Wu is considered tough and unmoving, symbolizing resistance to change.
