Ba Zi – ancient wisdom for modern times
“What is the difference between Western astrology and Ba Zi?”, people often ask.
They also want to know whether this ancient system applies to modern life.
Let me answer these questions.
Western astrology is based on planetary positions, while Ba Zi is about the Five Elements that precede everything, including the planets. While we existed in the form of the Five Elements even before we were born, the interplay of the Elements, as set at our birth, creates our life path and shapes experiences. Since the underlying principles of Ba Zi are universal, it doesn’t matter that it’s ancient wisdom. It is equally applicable today, as it used to be at some other times. This knowledge develops as we (as humanity) grow, although it’s also true that we grow as the Elements become more complex…
Knowing that both methods deal with cosmic blueprints, there is no point in questioning which method is better. These two pearls of wisdom, Western astrology, and Chinese Astrology Ba Zi – are just different.

Since the charts differ, there are quiet and collected charts, that belong to kind, peaceful, and understanding people. Particular luck cycles could make people feel confused and lost, causing them also to make decisions they will regret.On the other hand, certain luck cycles could lighten up an individual’s destiny, lessening their burdens and/or ending their suffering – while also bringing all kinds of a new careers, wealth, love, travel, and other opportunities.
When it comes to wealth and business, the Ba Zi chart shows both clients’ abilities and shortcomings, together with patterns that will follow them through their business ventures. It also indicates the best industry, where minimum effort could bring maximum satisfaction, together with many other important things. Further evaluation of the luck cycles and their influence on wealth and business could help us to anticipate possible issues, while revealing also the best time for expansion, investment, etc.
How predictable are our lives?
Each Ba Zi chart shows certain internal dynamics that create very specific patterns. These patterns make us think, feel, and act in unique ways, that lead to specific decisions, and – distinct outcomes. Taking all mentioned into consideration, we can say that our lives are mostly – predictable.
Since different charts produce distinctive life paths, erratic, and unpredictable charts typically produce similar lives, with numerous ups and downs, where gains are followed by losses. In the same manner, active charts produce active life, while passive charts that lack dynamics, produce … you get the gist, right?
In addition, there are average charts, as there are some outstanding charts.

When it comes to luck (that changes every 10 years), a new 10-year luck cycle could thoroughly stir up people’s charts – and their lives accordingly. Some luck cycles could slow everything down, bringing obstacles, halts, and a lack of real growth opportunities. On the other hand, there are luck cycles that will fill our lives with happenings and interactions, bringing support, help, and prosperity along the way.
Since all these can be seen from one’s 10-year Luck Cycles, this only confirms that an average person’s luck is mostly determined.
Ba Zi reading vs.Life Coaching
Although most people believe that they seek only balance and/or wealth, what they actually need is peace of mind and happiness. When it comes to “balance”, people tend to generalize it, disregarding that this is a state of mind unique to every one of us. Although many assume that the purpose of the Ba Zi reading is to guide people toward balance, we don’t necessarily want certain individuals to achieve balance in their life. Some charts require an additional push out of balance – because this might be the only way for someone to make progress and employ their potential.
When it comes to similarities in approach between Life Coaching and Ba Zi reading I believe that assessing the situation at this very moment in people’s lives (as in NOW) is a common thing. The main difference between the two is that in Ba Zi, we base our recommendations (possible courses of action and consequences of certain decisions)solely on the client’s chart assessment.
Nevertheless, Life Coaching and Ba Zi reading do have another common goal -connecting people with their life.
When one connects with their life path and becomes aware of the unique patterns (inherent or temporary) that work in the background of their life, this can be a game changer for them. Not only that acknowledgment of very specific limitations expands awareness, but it is also a liberating experience. Instead of fighting with life, one can be mindful, focusing on personal growth and making use of own abilities.
When it comes to just Ba Zi reading, it ideally provides a perspective, both on life and business. Being aware of current trends and all possible options is essential, not only because it gives a head-start advantage, but because it helps people to live a wholesome life. Since the most important part of an individual’s life is always what’s happening right now, knowing that place well can also aid in apprehending the available options.
After understanding the present moment of their life, clients could improve their prioritizing, as they could gain a better understanding of the consequences of certain decisions. It is also important to mention that a Ba Zi reading is NOT a guessing game because no one wants to waste their time on guessing. Therefore, a client is expected to provide a certain explanation, as he is advised to ask three highly specific questions (to get the precise answer, one has to take time to shape their question adequately). In my own experience, the best courses of action are always created through exchange with the client.
Since there are enthusiasts in both fields (we were all like that as beginners), they often tend to overwhelm clients with unnecessary information. More experienced practitioners are aware that no one needs to know everything right now, particularly because too much information burdens the person, interfering with their focus and prioritizing. Therefore, the challenge of this consultation, and with coaching people in general, is to stay centered and say what you need to say, without saying too little or too much.Since there is a possibility for annual, bi-annual, and quarterly consultations, there is plenty of time to deal with various subjects of the chart (we typically deal with things once they activate).
Finally, it is important to state that the core purpose of any type of coaching is helping clients to live their best life.
If a consultant has adequate knowledge and means to facilitate that, then it really doesn’t matter what is the name of the method, Ba Zi or Life Coaching. However, since I like to base my findings on the people’s Cosmic ID – their Ba Zi chart, Ba Zi would always be my preference.
