The Illusion of Wants vs. Needs

In a world driven by desire and ambition, we often feel compelled to seek more—more success, more money, more experiences, more excitement, and even more challenges in the name of growth.

But how often do we pause to ask ourselves:

Do I truly need this?

Or is this so-called “need” merely a habit of the mind, an automatic craving for something we believe will bring us fulfillment?

We pursue what we think we need, yet how often have we achieved exactly what we wanted—only to realize that it didn’t bring us any lasting happiness?

If we aren’t always the best judges of our own needs, then who can be?

Can an outside perspective—unbiased and free from our emotional attachments—provide a clearer understanding of what we require to grow, heal, and thrive?

The purpose of a Ba Zi consultation is not to offer what you want – but to help you identify what you truly need.

Wants vs. Needs: The Human Tendency to Desire More

It is human nature to want more—to crave progress, stimulation, and novelty. This urge is neither inherently good nor bad; it simply reflects the essence of being alive.

– We seek more pleasure, even though it often feels like it is never enough.

– We endure more hardship, believing that it builds our strength.

– We chase more experiences, forgetting that it takes time to absorb and learn from each lesson.

Our minds are wired for constant movement, always anticipating the next goal, phase, or answer.

However, what if the things we need are not the ones we are chasing?

  • What if the career change you desire is merely an attempt to escape the current dissatisfaction in your life?
  • What if the relationship you want is just a way to avoid confronting your loneliness?
  • What if the success you crave won’t bring happiness because you haven’t defined what success truly means to you?

Ba Zi coaching does not just provide you with what you want to hear; it reveals what is already written in the patterns of your life. It uncovers the energies that are present, the cycles that are unfolding, and where your genuine opportunities for growth lie.

It highlights not only your desires but also your blind spots.

Who Truly Knows What You Need?

We like to believe that we know ourselves best. After all, no one else has lived every moment of our lives. Yet, here’s the paradox: we are often the easiest people to deceive.

  • Our biases influence our decisions.
  • Our fears prevent us from seeing the truth.
  • Our attachments can cloud our judgment.

Sometimes, what we truly need is not another goal or answer but a different perspective.

A Ba Zi consultation is not about making decisions for you; rather, it serves as a mirror that reflects your strengths as well as the areas where your thinking might be limited.

It helps distinguish between wants and needs, allowing you to act with clarity.

  • It offers insights about timing—when to push forward, when to wait, and when to shift your focus.
  • It reminds you that you are the main character in your life, and only you can decide how to use the information provided.

As a human being and a Ba Zi coach, I am ultimately responsible only for my own life. However, I can help illuminate various paths and choices for others, providing understanding, perspective, and awareness. It’s important to note that what I offer may not always align with what others desire. It is up to individuals to differentiate between their wants and their true needs. This insight is essential as it brings about genuine change and supports the pursuit of true happiness.
