When There is No Judgment, There is No Need for Positive and Negative
Categorizing people and life experiences as positive or negative has become quite colloquial in today’s world. Labeling people, conditions, or situations is obviously the easiest way to deal with everything; it is also the way which doesn’t require depth or wisdom. However, this is a belief which should be questioned because it can cause a lot of harm. Plus, we need to challenge our beliefs once in a while…
Admitting that WE define things and that WE give meaning to our experiences is also some form of taking responsibility. So, let’s ask ourselves; what would remain once we stop using the words ‘positive’ and ‘negative’?
The answer is: just people and just experiences.
People are born with certain inclinations and predispositions, limitations and freedoms. Most importantly, we are all born with some lessons to learn. Hence, the overall success of one’s life cannot be defined either by money or lack of problems, just as it cannot be defined by knowledge or power. It really takes a greater perspective to see one’s life as a unique phenomenon and, in this perspective, every experience fits in as part of a big picture. So maybe we should stop judging people’s conditions or their situations as misfortune, as we could start questioning our belief that a shiny and attractive surface is advantageous.
Because it only matters what pays off in the end…
In case you like stories with morals, here is the one for you.
This Chinese story is known as:
‘’Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.’’
A farmer and his son had a beloved stallion who helped the family earn a living. One day, the horse ran away and the neighbors exclaimed: “Your horse ran away, what a terrible luck you have!”
The farmer stayed calm and replied: “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
A few days later, the horse returned home, leading a few wild mares back to the farm. The neighbors were excited: “Your horse has returned and brought several horses home with him. What a great luck you have!”
The farmer stayed calm this time as well and replied: “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
Later that week, the farmer’s son was trying to break one of the mares. She threw him to the ground, which ended with him breaking his leg. The villagers cried hurried to say: “Your son broke his leg, what a terrible luck for your family!”
The farmer replied in the same manner as before: “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
A few weeks later, soldiers from the national army marched through town, recruiting all the able-bodied boys for the army. They did not take the farmer’s son, because he was still recovering from his injury. This time, friends shouted: “Your boy is spared, what tremendous luck!”
And farmer replied in the old manner: “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
